Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is a major healthcare concern in the United States as more than 30% of the US population is obese and almost 5% of the population is morbidly (severely) obese. An individual who is more than 100 pounds overweight or has a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater is classified as morbidly obese. For most patients who struggle with morbid obesity, the risks are substantial. Excess weight increases the risk and severity of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, gall bladder disease, joint disease, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, depression and cancer.

Bariatric Centers of Excellence

To earn an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Center of Excellence designation, a bariatric program must undergo a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program's surgical processes are closely examined and data on health outcomes are collected. HCA North Florida’s Palmyra Medical Center, North Florida Regional Medical Center and Ocala Health have received the ASMBS stamp of approval. Learn more about the Bariatric Centers of Excellence...
